Everest2007

Mount Everest - ‘The Goddess of the Universe’ 8850m (29,035ft)

The Everest expedition was scheduled to coincide with the Centenary year of the Scout Movement in 2007. A Scout on top of Everest - what would Baden-Powell think if he could see what Scouting had achieved over the past one hundred years? In his day Victorian Britain was still enjoying the golden era of climbing in the European Alps.

Timescales, funding, skills, physical fitness, experience and most importantly attitude, were all major hurdles that had to be climbed prior to attempting Everest. Training for such a challenge relies heavily on the motivation and skill level of the individual and after several selection weekends two candidates emerged, Carrie Gibson and Keith Armour.

Subsequently, Carrie and Keith have both been on expeditions to Aconcagua to gain vital high altitude experience and in June 2005 enjoyed a trip to the European Alps to hone their technical skills.

On the 16th May 2007 Carrie Gibson became only the 6th Scottish female to summit Mt Everest.
